Lets talk about the importance of cleaning your eyelash extensions and eyes in between appointments. We have all heard the stories and maybe even seen the horrific photos of built up makeup, crusty yellow stuff around the lashes and lash mite infestations… but the reality is, if you aren’t regularly cleansing your lashes in between appointments, you could be closer to this happening to you than you think!
As we know, our natural eyelashes are there to keep dirt, sweat and other nasties from getting into our eyes. So when we have eyelash extensions applied that are more dense than our natural lashes, it becomes more common for a build up of these nasties to occur. This and the use of make up and other facial products everyday and it is easy to see how this super delicate area can become dirty reallllll quick without regular cleaning.
There are two main concerns when it comes to unclean lashes; an infestation of lash mites and Blepharitis. Lash mites, although sound terrifying – are naturally occurring in everyone, they feed on dead skin and burrow into our lash follicles. What is not normal, is when dead skin builds up and as a result a mite infestation occurs, causing discomfort around the eye area. Blepharitis is a result of the tiny oil glands near the base of our lashes becoming clogged. This generally only happens when we get a build up of makeup and oil/ debris that isn’t being washed away or cleaned properly daily. Unfortunately just water isn’t going to cut it when we have lash extensions applied, even if you don’t wear makeup.
Although Blepharitis is not contagious and doesn’t generally cause long term damage, it is important to get on top of so you avoid any itchiness, soreness, redness and inflammation. Blepharitis can also cause your natural lashes to fall out or grow twisted, which becomes an even bigger problem when the extra weight of an eyelash extension is applied.
Once one or both of these are present on your lashes, it becomes very difficult to remove/ clean (especially in a lash refill) and it WILL result in a full eyelash extension removal and deep clean and a possible break from lashes until any inflammation is gone. For this reason It is much easier and cheaper to keep your lashes clean in between your lash extension appointments.
I often hear from my clients that they are worried if they wash their lashes it will cause them to fall out prematurely, however this is not the case at all, quite the opposite! The lash cleanser that Odyssey Lash promotes is completely oil free and PH balanced, meaning it is designed to get those lashes and eyes squeaky clean, without breaking down the bond of the lash glue.
I will always cleanse your lashes before your appointment to ensure they are completely clean and fresh before a refill. But if you want to save even more time and score brownie points with your lash therapist, ensure you come to your appointment with no makeup on at all and especially no eyeliner or eye shadow.
